Birmingham Colmore Businesses Invited to Support Birmingham Mums Back into Work

Women’s Work Lab, an award-winning social enterprise, is now live in Birmingham and preparing for its second pilot programme, launching in April 2026.

Women’s Work Lab delivers a free 12-week HIVE programme during school hours, combining classroom-based learning, a four-week professional placement and nine months of tailored mentoring. The programme supports unemployed mums receiving state benefits to rebuild their confidence, skills and career prospects.

Since 2019, WWL has supported over 600 mums, with 92% graduating and 68% progressing into employment, formal training or work-related volunteering. On average, 70% move into work or training within nine months.

The need for this programme in Birmingham is significant. The city’s unemployment rate of 7.6% is above the UK average of 4.5%, and in some areas more than half of children live in poverty. Supporting mums into employment is one of the most effective ways to strengthen family financial security and improve long-term outcomes.

Women’s Work Lab has already secured partnerships with 12 local businesses who have stepped forward to host placements. We are now inviting additional Colmore BID organisations to get involved in the April programme.

The four-week placement is central to the programme’s success. By hosting a placement, businesses can:

  • Support inclusive growth and social mobility in Birmingham
  • Strengthen ESG and social value commitments
  • Access motivated, work-ready candidates
  • Make a tangible difference to a local family

Placements are fully supported by the WWL team, and participants are prepared with workplace skills and ongoing mentoring throughout.

Together, Birmingham businesses can help local mums build confidence, secure employment and create brighter futures.
