Birmingham Open 25 winner secures prestigious Royal Drawing School scholarship

An artist recognised through Colmore Life’s Birmingham Open 25 annual competition and exhibition has announced a major new milestone, having been awarded a full postgraduate scholarship to one of the UK’s most respected art institutions.

The winner of the Birmingham Open 25 competition, Ispahani Mukah has revealed he will join The Drawing Year programme at the Royal Drawing School in London this September, a highly competitive course known for nurturing some of the country’s most promising emerging artists.

Sharing the news, Mukah described the opportunity as a significant step forward in his creative journey. The Royal Drawing School, founded in 2000, has long been regarded as a leading centre for observational drawing, attracting applications from across the globe. Securing a full scholarship is considered a considerable achievement within the contemporary arts community.

Reflecting on their time as part of Birmingham Open 25, Mukah credited the exhibition with helping to build momentum in their practice.

He said: ” The Birmingham Open was such a beautiful experience, both in the quality of the exhibition and the conversations it sparked with people across the city. Winning the Open became an important moment in my practice, opening more doors and strengthening my confidence as a developing artist. I’m especially grateful to the Colmore team, who were consistently encouraging and supportive throughout, making the whole process a memorable one. “

Organised by Colmore Life, the Birmingham Open has established itself as a key platform for emerging and mid-career artists, showcasing diverse creative talent in the heart of the city. The exhibition not only provides visibility but also connects artists with new audiences, collectors and collaborators.

For the 2025 year’s winner, that platform has proven transformative.

Colmore’s continued investment in cultural programming aims to strengthen Birmingham’s reputation as a vibrant creative hub, and stories such as this demonstrate the tangible impact of that commitment. By championing artists and providing real opportunities for progression, the Birmingham Open continues to act as a springboard for talent from across the region and beyond.

With the transition to London now on the horizon, the scholarship marks the beginning of an intensive year of study and artistic exploration. The Drawing Year programme is known for its rigorous focus on traditional and contemporary drawing methods, offering students direct mentorship from established artists and access to a rich network of creative professionals.

As the artist prepares to take up their place this autumn, their journey stands as a compelling example of how local cultural initiatives can lead to national, and even international, opportunities.

From exhibition walls in Birmingham to the studios of the Royal Drawing School, this latest success story underscores the power of platforms like the Birmingham Open to shape the future of the UK’s creative landscape.
