A new creative writing course hosted by Anna Lawrence is set to launch this spring at the Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI), offering aspiring and experienced writers the opportunity to develop their craft in a supportive and inspiring environment.
Beginning on Tuesday 5 May 2026, the ten-week workshop series has been designed to help participants build momentum on their creative projects while sharpening the practical skills needed to take their writing further. Running weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Birmingham and Midland Institute, the course will guide writers through key aspects of the creative process, from structure and style to editing and solving narrative challenges.
Hosted by Lawrence, an experienced writer and tutor, the workshops will focus on a different writing skill each week while giving participants the opportunity to share works-in-progress with the group. Although sharing work is optional, organisers say writers who embrace feedback and discussion are likely to gain the most from the experience.
The course is aimed at adults who are already writing, whether regularly or occasionally, as well as those looking to return to writing after time away. Recognising that sharing creative work can feel daunting, organisers have placed a strong emphasis on creating an encouraging and constructive atmosphere where writers can build confidence alongside their peers.
To help participants stay motivated between classes, the programme also includes access to online drop-in Zoom writing sessions, typically held once or twice a week.
Workshops will take place at Birmingham and Midland Institute, 9 Margaret Street, B3 3BS, and will run until 14 July 2026, with no class during the school half-term break on 26 May.
Participants can choose between two booking options:
Option One – Six Session Pass (£180)
A flexible pass allowing writers to attend any six sessions across the ten weeks, with the option to pay for additional sessions as needed. Includes access to online writing sessions.
Option Two – Full Ten-Week Pass (£270)
Writers who commit to the full programme receive all ten sessions at a discounted rate, plus a manuscript critique of up to 3,000 words from Lawrence. An early bird rate of £250 is available for bookings made before 1 April 2026.
Writers unable to pay in full immediately can secure their place with a £50 deposit by 1 April, with the balance due before the course begins.
Places are expected to be limited, and early booking is encouraged.
