Experience the lively colours and energy of Molly dancing as Birmingham’s very own Brummie Gems Molly Dancers bring this lively winter folk tradition to the museum. Part of Glorishears of Brummagem Morris Dancers, the Brummie Gems put their own distinctive Birmingham twist on this centuries-old folk tradition. Their bright costumes are decorated with gems inspired by Birmingham’s historic jewellery trade. Molly dancing has its own roots in the Fens and was traditionally performed during the winter months, particularly around Plough Monday. Farm workers would take to the streets to dance and earn money, often performing in disguise and bringing plenty of humour and character to the tradition.
