New audio tour uncovers the secrets of Birmingham’s Catacombs

Explore one of Birmingham’s best-kept secrets with this immersive, self-guided audio experience.

Heritage guide and photographer Kevin Thomas has launched “Discover the Birmingham Catacombs”, a new downloadable audio tour that brings to life one of the city’s most atmospheric and overlooked historic sites.

Tucked away in Warstone Lane Cemetery, the catacombs have long been called Birmingham’s best-kept secret — a striking row of vaulted chambers built into the sandstone, surrounded by stories of Victorian visionaries, radical reformers, and resting places with a twist.

“The catacombs are an architectural marvel and a powerful reminder of how we once treated our dead,” says Thomas. “This tour is about more than bricks and bones — it’s a way to connect with Birmingham’s hidden history in the place it happened.”

The audio tour is geo-triggered and plays automatically as you move through the site. It’s perfect for solo wanderers, curious couples, or anyone looking for an atmospheric hour in one of the city’s most evocative spots. Just £8 to download and yours to explore whenever you fancy.

Highlights include:

  • The inventor of tennis… buried just beyond the yew trees
  • A druid-style grave that raises more questions than it answers
  • Alfred Bird’s sweet tribute to his custard-loving wife
  • 93,000 souls… and the vaults built to hold them
  • The secrets of Victorian death culture — and what they tell us now

Kevin Thomas is an acclaimed Birmingham-based guide and photographer. His walking tours were recently featured in The Times as one of the top seven in the UK.
