Labour MP Alex McIntyre has raised a motion to bring in a Domestic Abuse (Safe Leave) Bill through Parliament.  

The Bill proposes the introduction of two weeks paid ‘safe leave’ from work for victims of domestic abuse. The suggested 10 days entitlement could be used for facilitating the practical and emotional steps needed for a victim to deal with and escape from a domestic abuse situation. (e.g. attend solicitor’s offices, find alternative accommodation, seek medical help, organise childcare arrangements, attend a police station for reporting and interviews etc).  

The Bill has already had its first reading; the second reading is imminent. It is not known at this stage of the government will support the Bill but the proposal is drawing strong interest and support from leading domestic abuse charities and pressure groups.
