Future Business District

Future Business District

Our Future Business District programme is about shaping a city centre that remains vibrant, resilient and relevant; not just for today, but for the years that follow.

The past

Our journey began with the Future Business District Study, commissioned at a pivotal moment as Birmingham (and business districts everywhere) considered the long-term impact of the pandemic on city life.

The study explored how working patterns were changing, what businesses and employees would need in the years ahead, and how places can evolve to truly blend work, leisure, culture and community. It provided a powerful evidence base, shaping not only our priorities – but also the wider conversation about the future of Birmingham’s core.

The Present

Building on the study’s findings, we’re now delivering against our promises to reflect the city’s evolving needs.

City Curator

The appointment of Birmingham’s first City Curator — in partnership with all five city centre BIDs — marks a major step in reimagining the city as a place shaped by creativity and experience.

Strategic rebrand

In 2024/25 we undertook a strategic rebrand to better reflect who we are today and who we want to become. This work focused on redefining our identity, clarity of purpose and the reflecting the District’s distinct character, as well as our role in championing and representing our business needs to both local and national audiences.

The future

Looking ahead, our ambition is simple: to help create a business District that thrives – growing footfall, growth and quality of life.

Our future priorities include:

  • Strengthening place and the things that make our streets more enjoyable, greener and easier to navigate.
  • Championing creativity and cultural programming, building on the work of the City Curator to bring more activity into public spaces.
  • Supporting business resilience, ensuring the city stays competitive and remains a compelling home for talent.
  • Deepening our partnerships, because the city centre is strongest when organisations work together with purpose.

The Future Business District is about long-term thinking matched with long-term commitment, and we’re building on that future alongside our partners, businesses and communities. More on this soon!
