Public art brings energy, identity and moments of inspiration to Colmore Life. Through commissions, collaborations and creative interventions, we’ve transformed everyday spaces into places of colour, character and connection.
Our Livery Street Subway transformation revitalised a key pedestrian route in the District. Once a dark and uninviting underpass, it was transformed through improved lighting, and colourful tile designs and design to create a safer, more welcoming experience for those walking between Snow Hill Station and the Jewellery Quarter.
Bold, simple and proudly Brummie, Alright Bab! has become one of the District’s most recognisable pieces of public art. The installation, brought to life by Birmingham Light Festival, puts Birmingham’s iconic greeting up in lights, providing a joyful, everyday selfie spot that captures true essence of our city.
In 2021, we added a major new artwork as part of our Green in the City initiative – an 8ft by 60ft mural at the entrance to Livery Street, created by artists E.L Thrush (Luke Davies) and Anna Davies. Selected from more than 30 submissions, their design celebrates Birmingham through the lens of Brutalist influences, drawing inspiration from sculptor William Mitchell.
The mural blends stylised trees with a series of Birmingham landmarks and historical moments, encouraging passers‑by to spot familiar buildings, artworks and events. It was part of a wider programme of public artworks across the District, including the creative pieces installed on our parklets during 2020/21, several of which were also designed by Luke and Anna.
Our work along Livery Street has brought additional artistic interventions to soften and brighten a space shaped by transport infrastructure. These pieces contribute to a more inviting and culturally rich route for people moving through the district.
Located in Church Street Square, Umbra was created by artist Wolfgang Buttress and is one of the District’s earliest major public artworks. Combining form, texture and shadow, it creates a contemplative focal point within a busy urban setting and continues to anchor the square as a place for people to pause, gather and enjoy small cultural moments.
