Celebrating the Year of the Tiger in Birmingham

The Chinese Festival Committee Birmingham (CFCB) will be hosting their Chinese New Year celebrations online together with free performances at Bullring & Grand Central produced by Birmingham Hippodrome on Saturday 5^th February to welcome in the Year of the Tiger.

Between 12 and 5pm, shoppers and visitors to the city centre can enjoy the traditional, and much loved, lion dance and processions through Bullring & Grand Central as well as a packed programme featuring fan dancers, shaolin monks and face changing dancers. The celebrations will be followed by an online show from the CFCB in the evening from 5-7pm on Facebook and Youtube.

The live stream will feature videos from several organisations around Birmingham including West Midlands Safari Park who will be sharing an insight to their Bengal and Sumatran tigers. Other content will include Chinese calligraphy lessons, inside tours of Southside businesses, cooking guides including how to make traditional dumplings and hot pot, lion dances, prize giving and much more.

The lion dance procession is a firm favourite in our calendar and we look forward to shoppers joining us for a day of celebrations.”

The free festival is a hugely loved and long-running annual event and being part of Chinese New Year gives businesses a unique opportunity to work with Birmingham’s Chinese community, local schools and many other businesses in the Southside district. The CFCB are looking to the strength from the Year of the Tiger to develop plans for the return of a large scale celebration in Southside and across the city in 2023, and the District welcomes companies and individuals to get involved and be part of the strong growth of our community in Birmingham.
