Anwar press release

Anwar Khattak BEM and Birmingham Youth Sport Academy to join St Basils BIG SleepOut

Anwar Khattak BEM, the dedicated founder of Birmingham Youth Sport Academy (BYSA), will participate in the St Basils BIG SleepOut on November 29 at Millennium Point, Birmingham. Joining him are the young people he coaches, united in raising awareness and funds to combat youth homelessness.

Anwar, awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his voluntary service, is a passionate advocate for youth empowerment. Through BYSA, which he founded in 2002, Anwar has helped over 1,000 youngsters from deprived communities stay off the streets by promoting football, education, and mentorship. His efforts have transformed lives, guiding many towards successful careers and personal growth.

“Taking part in the St Basils BIG SleepOut aligns with our mission at BYSA to support vulnerable young people,” said Anwar. “This event allows us to stand in solidarity with those facing homelessness and contribute to a cause close to our hearts.”

The BIG SleepOut will see Anwar and BYSA members spending a night outdoors, raising funds for St Basils, a charity that supports nearly 4,000 young people each year in the Midlands. Anwar encourages the community to get involved, either by joining the SleepOut or donating to the cause.

“The work we do at BYSA is about more than just football – it’s about providing young people with the support they need to thrive. The St Basils BIG SleepOut is another way we can help change lives.” Anwar added.

Barrie Hodge, Head of Fundraising and Communications at St Basils, said, “We’re thrilled to have Anwar and the Birmingham Youth Sport Academy involved in this year’s BIG SleepOut. Their commitment to supporting young people mirrors our own, and together, we can make a significant impact in preventing youth homelessness.”
