Birmingham City University Launches CreaTech Frontiers Pilot Programme to Power Innovation in the West Midlands

Birmingham City University has launched an ambitious new initiative aimed at supercharging innovation in the region’s creative and technology sectors. The CreaTech Frontiers pilot programme, now open for applications, invites SMEs and sole traders across the West Midlands to explore the boundaries of research and development in creative technologies.

With funding support of £5,000 to £10,000 available for selected R&D projects, the programme is designed to inspire ground-breaking work across a broad range of themes, including:

  • Beyond Games: Game engine development, gamification, AI and world-building
  • Enabling Technologies: AI/ML, robotics, haptics, cloud computing and advanced networks
  • Immersive Media: XR and immersive audio experiences
  • Live Performance: Innovations in music and AI, digital storytelling, and augmented performance
  • Screen Industries: Virtual production and sustainable media practices
  • Visual Arts: Digital heritage, museums and creative content production
  • CreaTech Research: Focused on sustainability, EDI, and tackling social and cultural challenges
  • Wildcard Ideas: Open to “something amazing we haven’t thought of yet”

This initiative is part of a broader effort to stimulate cross-sector collaboration and position the West Midlands as a national hub for Createch innovation.
