Food poverty is an issue that affects a huge amount of people in Birmingham. Last year, almost 120,000 three-day emergency food packages were given out to people in the city – more than 43,000 of those were to children.
That’s why last year BirminghamLive set up #BrumFeeds – a campaign to encourage local people and businesses to help their fellow Brummies by donating whatever they can to their nearest foodbank. We set out to raise 100 tonnes of donations, and we were overwhelmed with support; by the end of the year we’d received more than 220 tonnes of donations.
However, food poverty is set to rise even further in 2019, and so BirminghamLive is bringing #BrumFeeds back.
On the morning of Friday 26th April we will be at New Street station, spreading the word that Brummie families need your help in order to survive. To get the message across, we’re giving away special #BrumFeeds teddy bears – all you need to do to take one home is take a picture of it and share it on your social media with the hashtag #BrumFeeds. By sharing the #BrumFeeds message you can help give a voice to vulnerable people in our city who don’t feel like they can speak up themselves.
We’ll also be telling people how they can help their local foodbanks, and the items that are most needed by them. Tinned vegetables, breakfast cereals, coffee, washing up liquid, sanitary towels, and toothpaste – these kinds of everyday essentials are absolutely vital for foodbanks.
