Culinary quiz launches the Colmore Food Festival 2019

The official countdown to this year’s Colmore Food Festival began last night (Thursday, June 20) with a culinary quiz in Birmingham city centre.

Sixteen teams drawn from businesses across the District took part in the competition at 55 Colmore Row. Quizmaster Stoo Pittaway from Box Entertainment covered the full gamut of gastronomy, challenging guests with everything from hazarding a guess at the herby ingredients of a béarnaise sauce to calculating the calorie count of a Jaffa cake!

Team names were as varied and quirky as the food and drinks that will be served up at the forthcoming festival but in a hard fought contest, Pint Shop Birmingham – who along with The Alchemist, Asha’s, Chung Ying, Hookways, Purecraft Bar and Kitchen, 200 Degrees and Zen Metro served up a selection of tasty treats and drinks on the night to keep participants refreshed – emerged clear winners.

Colmore Food Festival sponsors DWF Law finished in the runners-up spot while the Bite Your Brum team – consisting of some of the city’s top food bloggers and considered by many to be the pre-match favourites – stormed back from last pace at the interval to finish in a very respectable third place.

Amongst the fun and games of the competition, a collection was also held for SIFA Fireside – Colmore BID’s nominated charity – and almost £350 as raised, all of which will go towards SIFA’s work helping the city’s homeless and rough sleepers.

The Colmore Food Festival 2019 takes place on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6 in Victoria Square. The list of restaurants, eateries, cafes and bars taking part, which this year includes three new participating venues, and what they’ll be serving up over the two day festival are available to view here.
