Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today announced a new programme of lockdown measures as the nation heads towards a ‘perilous turning point’. Businesses are being encouraged to work from home where possible and pubs, bars and restaurants must close by 10pm every evening. Johnson said the new restrictions could be in place for the next six months.
Other key points from today’s briefing include:
- Pubs, bars, restaurants and other hospitality businesses must operate table service only and, from Thursday, must close every evening at 10pm.
- Retail workers and taxi passengers must wear face coverings.
- Face coverings must also be worn by staff and customers in indoor hospitality businesses, except when they are seated at a table to eat and drink.
- Fines for breaking the rules will increase.
- Covid-secure guidelines for workplaces and venues will become a legal obligation.
- Plans to allow people to attend live sporting events and conferences from 1 October will be delayed.
- Indoor team sports of more than six people will be banned.
- People who were on the shielding list during the full lockdown do not need to shield unless they’re in a local lockdown area.
