PMP Consultants has highlighted its role in the landmark restoration of Birmingham’s Grand Hotel as part of its five-year anniversary celebrations.
Acting as Quantity Surveyor and Contract Administrator, PMP was appointed by Hortons’ Estate to oversee the complex regeneration of the Grade II* listed 19th-century building, which had fallen into significant disrepair. The project involved extensive collaboration with stakeholders including Historic England, Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Colmore and a range of conservation specialists.
Early enabling works included intrusive surveys and the removal of asbestos and widespread infestations, with around 2,000 tonnes of material cleared from the site to prepare the building for redevelopment. The façade and roof were stripped back, allowing damaged stonework to be repaired, replaced and reinforced, while also enabling the addition of a lightweight two-storey rooftop extension to increase capacity.
Internally, the restoration revived the hotel’s grand ballroom and introduced new meeting and function spaces, alongside a restaurant, bars and leisure facilities. The façade works were recognised with a Birmingham Civic Society Award, while the wider scheme won the Commercial Category at the RICS Awards West Midlands.
According to Hortons’ Estate, the redevelopment has significantly boosted the building’s commercial performance, tripling office rental values and revitalising the surrounding area with an expanded and diversified retail and food offering. The project has brought renewed life to Colmore Row, delivering modern workspace alongside a vibrant mix of independent businesses.
