Birmingham is set to host one of the UK’s most exciting health and wellbeing experiences when the Inside Out: The Microbiome & Gut Health Festival comes to Centenary Square in 2027.
Designed to inspire healthier lives through education, engagement and prevention, the festival will feature the headline attraction, The Giant Gut Experience; an immersive, interactive exhibition that takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the human microbiome and explores the vital role gut health plays in overall wellbeing.
The free public event forms part of the national Inside Out Health & Wellbeing Festival, which launched successfully in London in September 2025 and attracted strong public engagement. Ahead of its Birmingham arrival, the Giant Gut Experience will also be showcased at New Scientist Live at Excel London in October 2026.
A festival focused on health, prevention and community
Inside Out has been created as a national campaign that encourages people to better understand their health and take positive steps towards improved wellbeing.
Alongside the Giant Gut Experience, visitors can expect a packed programme of engaging activities, including:
- Expert-led talks and interactive discussions
- Live demonstrations from accredited nutritionists, wellbeing specialists and chefs
- Practical advice to support healthier everyday habits
- Community pavilions showcasing local organisations and initiatives
- Social prescribing hubs connecting people with support services in their area
- Hands-on workshops and wellbeing experiences for all ages
The festival has been designed with community participation and co-creation at its heart, creating opportunities for residents, businesses, health professionals and local organisations to come together and explore innovative approaches to health and wellbeing.
Understanding the microbiome
At the centre of the festival is a focus on the human microbiome and the growing understanding of its impact on both physical and mental wellbeing.
Through immersive experiences and accessible learning opportunities, visitors will be able to explore how gut health influences everyday life and discover practical ways to support their long-term health.
The event also aims to support workforce wellbeing, strengthen community connections and contribute to regional health and economic growth.
